“Abortion Law in Thailand Explained Simply Here!”
Is abortion legal in Thailand? What are the conditions? Many people may still be unsure about the legal aspects. Today, we summarize it in an easy-to-understand way.
1. Is abortion possible in Thailand?
It is possible under the law, but it must comply with the specified conditions.
Legal conditions
– Pregnancy not exceeding 12 weeks → Can be done without conditions
– Pregnancy 12 – 20 weeks → Can be done, but must receive counseling from a doctor or specialist first
– Abortion can be performed at any gestational age if there is a risk to physical or mental health, severe fetal impairment, pregnancy from rape, abuse, or if under 15 years old, but should not exceed 24 weeks
2. Who can provide abortion services?
Doctors – Provide services in hospitals or clinics. In Thailand, there are abortion service facilities in both public and private hospitals, as well as public benefit organization clinics, spread across all regions. Each place has different conditions based on gestational age, indications, and referral areas.
– Do not go for illegal abortions because the person performing it is not a doctor and uses incorrect methods, such as using sharp objects, injecting substances into the uterus, or pressing and squeezing the abdomen.
– Do not buy abortion pills online because they are unreliable, do not ask about gestational age, drug allergies, medical history, and are often scams where you do not receive the pills, receive fake pills, or the usage and dosage do not match the gestational age, etc.
3. Women’s rights in abortion
– Women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies.
– Receive safe treatment from experienced doctors.
– Receive accurate information and counseling without pressure.
4. How to ensure a safe abortion?
– Do not risk using unsafe methods, such as buying pills from unreliable sources or going for illegal abortions.
– Contact the RSA volunteer network service that offers abortion referrals (RSA volunteer network established by the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health) to receive accurate information and care by doctors.
