Emergency Contraceptive Pills are used in cases of unprotected sex or when protection fails, such as a broken or slipped condom, or forgetting to take regular birth control pills.
There are 2 types of emergency contraceptive pills.
- Single pill: Take immediately or within 72 hours after intercourse.
- Two pills: Can be taken in 2 ways
- First pill immediately or within 72 hours, second pill 12 hours after the first.
- Take both pills together immediately or within 72 hours.
The sooner you take it, the more effective it is. Within 24 hours: Most effective.
Things to know
- Emergency contraceptive pills should not replace regular birth control.
- Do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
- May cause menstrual irregularities, nausea, or breast tenderness.
- If vomiting occurs within 2 hours of taking, take another dose immediately.
If your period does not occur within 3 weeks after use, consider a pregnancy test.
