An intrauterine device or IUD is a small device that a doctor inserts into the uterine cavity to prevent pregnancy. It can be used for a duration ranging from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type of IUD.

Types of IUDs

IUDs are divided into 2 main types:

  1. Hormonal IUD

Releases progesterone hormone continuously, thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg, thinning the uterine lining, and reducing the chance of egg implantation. Lifespan: 3-7 years

  • Copper IUD
  • Made of plastic coated with copper, contains no hormones, suitable for those allergic to hormones or who do not wish to use hormones. Lifespan: up to 10 years

Which IUD should you choose? Consider the following:

  • Physical condition and health history such as hormone allergies, anemia, etc.
  • Duration of contraception needed If a long-term gap is desired, choose the copper type.
  • Previous menstrual symptoms If you have heavy periods or severe cramps, avoid the non-hormonal type.
  • Convenience and budget Generally, IUDs have a one-time cost, are long-lasting, and are cost-effective in the long run.
