An intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective long-term contraceptive method, but many people may wonder if there are any side effects after insertion.
Possible Side Effects (but not everyone will experience them)
- Lower abdominal pain or cramping similar to menstrual pain during the first 1-3 days after insertion
- Spotting or heavier menstrual bleeding especially with non-hormonal IUDs
- Dizziness or slight fatigue as a response of the body to a foreign object
- Acne or mood swings in the case of hormonal IUDs (rare)
Abnormal Symptoms That Require Medical Attention
- Excessive bleeding
- Severe abdominal pain
- Fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge
- Unable to feel the IUD string or feeling that the IUD has dislodged
Self-Care After IUD Insertion
- Avoid sexual intercourse during the first 7 days
- Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 1-2 days
- Attend follow-up appointments to assess the position of the IUD
Overall, most side effects are usually temporary. If you experience any abnormal symptoms or feel uncertain, consult a doctor immediately.
