
What is vacuum aspiration? How safe is this method of pregnancy termination?
Vacuum aspiration is one of the methods used by doctors to safely terminate a pregnancy, especially in cases where the pregnancy is not more than 12 weeks, and up to 16 weeks if performed by a specialist doctor.
How to prepare before receiving the service
- Check the gestational age with an ultrasound
- Inform your medical history, such as chronic diseases or drug allergies
- Refrain from food and water before the procedure as per the doctor’s advice (if necessary)
Vacuum aspiration procedure
- The doctor will administer local anesthesia or pain relief medication to reduce sensation
- Use a small instrument to suction tissue from the uterine cavity
- The procedure takes 5-10 minutes. Afterward, there will be a period of observation, and you can go home on the same day
Self-care after pregnancy termination
- There may be slight bleeding for 1–2 weeks
- Avoid heavy exertion or sexual intercourse initially
- Observe for abnormal symptoms such as high fever, severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding (soaking more than 2 pads per hour for more than 2 consecutive hours)
- It is advisable to see a doctor for follow-up appointments
