Medical Abortion
The use of medication is a safe method and is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for pregnancies up to 12 weeks. It can be self-administered at home with guidance from a doctor. If the pregnancy is more than 12 weeks, medication can still be used to terminate the pregnancy, but a stay at a medical facility may be required.
Process
- Use Mifepristone to inhibit hormone function, making the uterine lining unsuitable for embryo growth.
- Use Misoprostol to soften the cervix, causing the uterus to contract and expel tissue, similar to a natural miscarriage.
Advantages
- Privacy, can be done at home
- Low chance of complications
Limitations
- Bleeding similar to menstruation for several days
- May experience abdominal pain, nausea, or fatigue
- Not suitable for certain cases, such as ectopic pregnancy
Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA)
This method uses instruments to suction tissue from the uterine cavity, suitable for pregnancies up to 12 weeks and up to 16 weeks by a skilled physician.
Process
- Use vacuum instruments to suction the embryo and placenta from the uterus
- Takes about 10-15 minutes, with recovery time to monitor symptoms, and can return home the same day
Advantages
- Quick procedure
- Less bleeding compared to medication
Limitations
- Requires a visit to a medical facility
- May experience temporary uterine pain during the procedure
- Risk of infection if not properly cared for and performed in an unsuitable facility
Which method is suitable for you?
- Pregnancy up to 12 weeks → Medication at home or vacuum aspiration at a medical facility
- Pregnancy 12-16 weeks → Medication at a medical facility or vacuum aspiration by a skilled physician
- Pregnancy more than 16 weeks → Termination at a medical facility with an overnight stay
Which method is safer?
Both methods are safe if performed by a physician or under the care of a standard medical facility. The choice of method depends on gestational age, convenience, and the physical condition of the patient.
