
Birth Control Pills 21 Tablets and 28 Tablets: What’s the Difference?
There are 2 main types of birth control pills: 21 tablets and 28 tablets. They work similarly but differ in usage.
- 21-tablet birth control → Contains hormones in every tablet. You must take a 7-day break before starting a new pack.
- 28-tablet birth control → Contains 21 hormone tablets and 7 placebo tablets. Use continuously without a break.
How to Use Birth Control Pills Correctly
21-tablet birth control Take 1 tablet at the same time every day. After finishing the pack, take a 7-day break before starting a new pack.
28-tablet birth control Take in order according to the day, 1 tablet per day. The last 7 tablets are placebo (no hormones) but must be taken completely. After finishing the pack, start a new pack immediately.
What to Do If You Forget to Take a Birth Control Pill?
- Forgot 1 tablet → Take it as soon as you remember and take the next tablet as usual.
- Forgot 2 consecutive tablets → Take 2 tablets as soon as you remember and another 2 tablets the next day.
- Forgot 3 or more tablets → Stop the current pack and start a new pack. Use condoms while waiting to start the new pack.
Side Effects of Birth Control Pills
- Nausea and vomiting (common in the initial period)
- Spotting (common in the initial period or if pills are frequently missed)
- Slight weight gain in some cases
- Mood swings
