Support systems exist — but don’t let anyone wait until it’s too late
During the past Songkran, we saw heartbreaking news from two women:
- The first gave birth while playing in the water and left the baby until it died
- The other wrapped a wire around her one-year-old’s neck to spite the stepfather
These two incidents are different, but they have something in common —both women were in situations without a safe space to seek help
If consulted from the start, some things might not have happened
Unplanned pregnancy, family stress, feelings of isolation — none of these should be left for women to handle alone. What they lack is not responsibility, but a system that listens, helps think, and offers timely options
Everyone should know that:
- They can consult about unplanned pregnancy for free without revealing their identity
- There are safe and legal ways to terminate a pregnancy
- If not ready to raise a child, they can still legally give the child to someone else to care for
- And the mother’s mental health should be cared for just as much as her physical health
Don’t let anyone think “there’s no way out”
Having a support system alone is not enough. We must make it accessible, understandable, and non-judgmental because on the day someone is confused, stressed, or in pain, what she might need is not a lesson… but someone ready to listen
If you or someone close to you is facing an unplanned pregnancy, don’t face it alone
