What is implantation bleeding like?

Many people wonder what the bleeding that occurs early after intercourse is. “Implantation bleeding” or implantation blood is a symptom that can occur when the embryo begins to implant in the uterine lining. It usually occurs about 6–12 days after ovulation, but not everyone experiences it.

Characteristics of implantation bleeding

  • Pale pink, brown, or light red
  • Small amount, often just a slight stain on underwear
  • No smell, does not clot
  • Usually lasts only 1–2 days
  • May be accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, lower abdominal cramps, or dizziness

How to know if it’s “pregnancy” or “just a period”?

Implantation bleeding usually occurs earlier than menstruation and is much lighter. If you have recently had intercourse and experience bleeding similar to implantation bleeding, it is recommended to wait to take a pregnancy test 14 days after the last intercourse, or if your period is late, you can test immediately.
