Facebook Live: Abortion is a Normal Part of Life, It’s Not Wrong to Start Talking Dr. Somchai Peerapakorn, Member of the Volunteer Network (RSA: Referral system for safe abortion) and Retired WHO Staff

From work experience on women’s mortality, it is found that deaths from unsafe abortion are considered unnecessary. In developed countries, the mortality rate from unsafe abortion is very low because they have a well-organized, quality, and safe service system for women with unplanned pregnancies who wish to terminate their pregnancies. If Thailand can enable women with unplanned pregnancies to access services without being dehumanized, it is believed that the severity of the unplanned pregnancy problem will decrease. Women will not rely on “underground” abortion services because they can receive services at hospitals.

“Hospitals should have a good system for providing services to women with unplanned pregnancies. When a woman walks in, she should know who she will consult with, what her options are, and if she decides, what the process will be to manage the problem. Just like diabetes, patients go for blood sugar tests, and the hospital will have signs indicating the steps and health impacts if blood sugar levels are high for patients to know. The issue of unplanned pregnancies should be handled in the same way.”
