Abstract

The study on the service system model and acceptance of medical abortion in Thailand aims to explore the service system model for medical abortion and the acceptance of medical abortion services by providers and recipients. This will lead to guidelines for developing an efficient service system and management. The study employed qualitative research methods, including document study, in-depth interviews, and non-participant observation. The target group consisted of key informants, including service providers such as doctors, nurses, social workers, service recipients, and representatives from organizations related to the medical abortion service system, totaling 30 people. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis.

The study found that the service system model for medical abortion using Mifepristone combined with Misoprostol, packaged together, is mostly integrated into the existing abortion service system in a one-stop service format. This allows service recipients to contact providers directly, maintaining high confidentiality for the recipients. The use of these drugs for abortion is accepted by both providers and recipients due to its effectiveness in safely terminating pregnancies, convenience, ease of use for recipients, minimal side effects, and its natural-like method. It helps reduce the burden on doctors, decreases the use of medical instruments, reduces service costs, and provides a private experience for recipients.

However, providing medical abortion services still requires emphasis on creating understanding and changing the attitudes of providers and Thai society to recognize the necessity of safe abortion services with increased options.

Additionally, there should be promotion of knowledge exchange between service facilities, with experienced mentor doctors available to advise doctors new to using the drugs, ensuring understanding and confidence in their use and prescription. This also aims to boost morale for current service providers. Finally, there should be promotion of respect for the rights of both providers and recipients in deciding on treatment methods.
