During the New Year, a service recipient was referred from the 1663 unplanned pregnancy consultation line to the RSA volunteer network. They reported buying medication online and losing up to 15,000 baht.
Dao (a pseudonym) called for consultation services. Dao’s menstrual cycle was irregular, occurring every 3-4 months. She had previously consulted a doctor who said it was nothing serious but could affect her ability to conceive. Dao mentioned having unprotected sex with her boyfriend but only found out she was pregnant two months ago. Unsure of what to do, she told her boyfriend, who left the decision to her. She saved money to order medication online until she was 12 weeks pregnant. The medication was unsuccessful, so she saved money to buy it a second time. After using it again without success, she went for an ultrasound on New Year’s Eve and found out she was 16 weeks pregnant. All the money she had saved, totaling 15,000 baht, was spent on buying medication twice.
Dao wants to terminate the pregnancy because she is currently in her first year of university and living with her grandmother. Her parents separated, and her father remarried. Her mother passed away two years ago. After her mother’s death, her father supported her education. She doesn’t want to tell her father about the pregnancy for fear of not being able to continue her studies. Her boyfriend, who got her pregnant, cannot take responsibility and is unemployed.
The service recipient thinks that after terminating the pregnancy, she wants to break up with her boyfriend for good. He dislikes working and has no sense of responsibility. The service recipient is determined to complete her studies to have a better life and a stable job. She currently has only 4,000 baht left, which is the money her father gave her for university this month. She cannot find additional money and has no one to borrow from.
Dao was referred to a service facility within the RSA volunteer network, supported by the NHSO, safely. We hope this lesson will lead Dao to succeed in her studies and have a good career as she hopes.
