Can teenage mothers continue their education?

Yes, teenage mothers have the right to continue their education by law. Educational institutions must not deny educational opportunities to pregnant students. All schools and educational institutions must protect the rights of teenage mothers to receive equal education.


Laws and policies protecting teenage mothers

  • The Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand grants everyone the right to receive equal basic education.
  • The Act on Prevention and Solution of the Adolescent Pregnancy Problem provides a system of care, assistance, and protection for pregnant students to receive education in an appropriate and continuous manner. It also provides a referral system for reproductive health services and appropriate social welfare.
  • Ministry of Education policy allows pregnant students to continue their education in their current institution without being pressured to leave, unless transferring is the student’s intention. Flexible education arrangements must be made for teenage mothers.

Rights of teenage mothers in the education system

  • Have the right to return to their original school or transfer to another school voluntarily.
  • Have the right to participate in exams and receive educational qualifications.
  • Have the right to receive support from educational institutions, such as distance learning or accelerated courses.
  • Educational institutions must not discriminate or practice exclusion against teenage mothers.
