This is the voice of a pregnant woman who is suffering from disappointment, sadness, and still has to face cruelty because she cannot access safe pregnancy termination.
From this case, there has been widespread criticism of the behavior of healthcare facilities avoiding performing abortions, even when necessary. Does this mean that healthcare facilities are violating the rights of pregnant women?
This led to the gathering of the Unplanned Pregnancy Network, RSA Volunteer Network, AIDS and Unplanned Pregnancy Counseling Hotline 1663, and a coalition of 59 organizations submitting an open letter to 5 relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), National Health Security Office (NHSO), Social Security Office (SSO), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Medical Council.
They call for the establishment of standards for care, development, and monitoring of pregnancy termination services to be one of the standard health services, in line with the Penal Code on abortion B.E. 2564.
They also emphasize that part of the problem is due to healthcare personnel lacking knowledge in methods of pregnancy termination, the gestational age at which it can be done, the Penal Code on abortion, lack of information on service networks, and referral guidelines, etc.
“The Coverage” volunteers to take everyone to listen to the perspective of Dr. Ruangkit Sirikanchanakul, President of the RSA Volunteer Network Development Association, on the issue of pregnancy termination, as well as the expectations for safe pregnancy termination to proceed according to normal mechanisms.
