When a couple decides definitively that they do not want to have more children, sterilization is one of the highly effective permanent birth control methods. But the question is, should the sterilization be done on the “female or male” side? Which method is more suitable and safer?

Male Sterilization (vasectomy)

  • Involves cutting and sealing the vas deferens
  • Uses local anesthesia, no need for general anesthesia
  • Short surgery time, quick recovery
  • Low risk and minimal complications
  • Normal semen ejaculation but without sperm

Female Sterilization (tubal ligation)

  • Involves tying or sealing the fallopian tubes
  • Requires minor surgery with general anesthesia or spinal block
  • More complex process, slower recovery
  • Higher risk from anesthesia or surgery

Which side should undergo sterilization?

  • If the couple considers risk and convenience, male sterilization is often more suitable
  • If the female is already undergoing a cesarean section, female sterilization can be considered simultaneously
  • Joint discussion between both parties is the most important

Sterilization is a long-term decision. Ensure there are no plans to have more children and always consult a doctor beforehand.
