Emergency Contraceptive Pills are used in cases of unprotected sex or when protection fails, such as a condom breaking or slipping, or forgetting to take regular birth control pills.

There are 2 types of emergency contraceptive pills.

  1. Single pill: Take immediately or within 72 hours after intercourse.
  2. Two pills: Can be taken in 2 ways
    1. First pill immediately or within 72 hours, second pill 12 hours after the first.
    1. Take both pills together immediately or within 72 hours.

The sooner you take it, the more effective it is. Within 24 hours: Most effective.

Things to know

  • Emergency contraceptive pills should not replace regular birth control pills.
  • Do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
  • May cause menstrual irregularities, nausea, or breast tenderness.
  • If vomiting occurs within 2 hours of taking, take another dose immediately.

If your period does not occur within 3 weeks after use, a pregnancy test is recommended.
