Is abortion possible in Thailand?
The answer is: It is legally possible according to the Amendment to the Criminal Code, No. 28 B.E. 2564 if conditions are met.
What are the criteria for “possible”?
- Pregnancy not exceeding 12 weeks. Women can receive services voluntarily under the supervision of a doctor.
- Pregnancy exceeding 12 weeks but not exceeding 20 weeks. It can be done by consulting with a medical service provider or a certified expert from the Department of Health to confirm the decision to terminate the pregnancy.
- Other legal cases such as
- Pregnancy resulting from rape or assault (no police report required)
- Pregnancy affecting the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman
- The fetus has severe abnormalities
- The pregnant woman is under 15 years old
It’s not just “possible” but must be “done safely.”
