Many people still mistakenly believe that “withdrawal” or “safe period counting” are methods of contraception

But in reality, both are not considered reliable methods of contraception and often lead to unintended pregnancies without the person realizing it.

Why doesn’t “withdrawal” help prevent pregnancy?

  • Before ejaculation, sperm may be present in the pre-ejaculate fluid
  • There is no way to know for sure if sperm has been released
  • The pregnancy rate from withdrawal is as high as 20 out of 100 people
  • There is no 100% control over timing

Why is safe period counting risky?

  • A woman’s menstrual cycle is always subject to change due to stress, lack of rest, or hormonal imbalances
  • Ovulation may occur earlier or later than expected, making the “safe days” not truly safe
  • Sperm can survive in the body for up to 5 days

So what are the truly effective “contraceptive methods”?

Medically confirmed methods include:

  • Condoms
  • Monthly birth control pills
  • Emergency contraceptive pills (for emergencies only)
  • Implants / Injectable contraceptives
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)

All of these methods have an effectiveness rate of over 90–99% if used correctly and consistently

Conclusion

“Withdrawal” and “safe period counting” are not considered contraception and should not be used as primary methods if you are not ready to become pregnant
