Pregnant at a new job: Should you take maternity leave or terminate?
You just started a new job, barely settled in, life seems to be just beginning. But then… you find out you’re pregnant. The immediate questions are, “Can I continue working?” “How long will I need to take off?” “Will I be laid off?” Or even “Should I terminate the pregnancy?”
Consider the overall picture before deciding
If you choose to continue the pregnancy
- You are entitled to maternity leave by law (up to 98 days). However, if you just started the job and are unsure about social security rights, you should consult HR or the hotline 1506.
- Maternity leave may affect your performance evaluation during the probation period or your career growth plans. If you have an understanding manager or supervisor, you may be able to manage it well together.
If you choose to terminate the pregnancy
- You should consider the gestational age and study the methods of termination.
- If terminating with medication, you may need a short break (1–2 days).
- If you need to work immediately, choose a time when your body is ready, so you don’t compromise your work and can still take care of your mental health.
There is no right answer for everyone, but there is an answer that best suits your situation. Planning with information will help you not regret your choice.
