Teenagers and women are still injured, suffer from complications, and die from unsafe and expensive illegal abortions in almost every province of the country. Even though many cases are necessary and fall under legal abortion by a doctor, it is difficult to find a doctor to provide the service. For example, the pregnant person is a minor under 15 years old, the woman has physical illness, mental conditions, stress, depression, the fetus is sick or severely disabled in the womb, contraceptive failure, rape/deception, or other reasons, and it has social impacts such as child abandonment, abandoned fetuses, and an increase in orphans, etc.

RSA (Referral system for Safe abortion) is a network of doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, public health professionals, pharmacists, teachers, and other multidisciplinary professionals from the public and private sectors who volunteer to provide consultation, referral, or safe pregnancy termination services according to the guidelines of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists using medication or vacuum aspiration, with indications consistent with the law and medical council regulations for women with unplanned pregnancies who have physical and mental health issues.

RSA Operations collaborate with various organizations to support and promote the reduction of unsafe abortion problems, pioneering service systems and referral systems that meet academic standards to respond to measures to reduce public health problems, reduce maternal mortality rate (MMR) and neonatal mortality rate (NMR), and improve the quality of life of the Thai population by working as a service referral network as follows:

  • Collaborate with the unplanned pregnancy consultation line 1663, One Stop Crisis Center, adolescent clinics, and various agencies to provide consultation options for women and teenagers with unplanned pregnancies.
  • Collaborate with healthcare facilities in the RSA volunteer network and other healthcare facilities to receive referrals when continuing the pregnancy is not an option, to ensure safe pregnancy termination.
  • Collaborate with networks supporting women’s options with unplanned pregnancies when the choice is to continue the pregnancy or when the gestational age exceeds the limit for termination, to coordinate referrals for comprehensive care and assistance.
  • Collaborate with health service units to access effective contraception services after pregnancy termination or childbirth to prevent future unplanned pregnancies.
