The contraceptive patch (brand name Evra®) works like oral contraceptive pills but is more convenient and assures the user of contraception because they can feel that the patch is still in place. The patch is approximately 4.5×4.5 centimeters and is applied to the skin on the hip, abdomen, outer arm, or upper back, with the medication absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.

Start applying on the first day of menstruation, keep it on for 7 days, then replace with a new patch. After using 3 patches over 3 weeks, take a break for one week (similar to taking 21-day contraceptive pills). Menstruation will occur during the week without the patch.

5 Tips for Using the Contraceptive Patch

1. Do not use lotions/creams on the skin where the patch will be applied.
2. Do not apply the patch on skin that is not completely dry.
3. Do not cut the patch into different shapes, such as a star, as it will reduce effectiveness.
4. You can bathe, swim, and exercise as usual without removing the patch.
5. If the patch comes off, if it is still usable, continue using it. If it cannot be reapplied, use a new patch but only for the remaining time. For example, if 3 days are left, use the new patch for only 3 days before changing it.

What to do if you forget to apply the patch…
* If it’s within 2 days, apply it as soon as you remember.
* If more than 2 days have passed, use a condom for contraception and start applying the patch in the next menstrual cycle.
