Many people are shocked when their period is late or comes at the wrong time. The first question is often, “Am I pregnant?” But the truth is… there are many factors that can cause changes in your menstrual cycle even if you are not pregnant.

Causes of “late or early periods” unrelated to pregnancy

1. Stress  High stress affects the part of the brain that controls ovulation, which may cause your period to be late or missed altogether

2. Lack of sleep or insufficient rest Irregular sleep patterns or shift work can affect the secretion of sex hormones, potentially altering your menstrual cycle

3. Rapid weight change Rapid weight loss or gain affects fat levels and sex hormones, which control ovulation

4. Excessive exercise Especially in athletes or those who exercise intensively every day, this can cause periods to stop or become irregular

5. Use of contraceptives Monthly or emergency contraceptives can cause periods to come early, late, or be missed in some cycles

6. Hormonal imbalance Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can cause chronic menstrual irregularities

7. Adolescence or approaching menopause Menstrual cycles in teenagers are often irregular in the first few years, while those over 40 may start missing periods due to declining hormones

8. Illness or chronic disease Major illnesses, such as severe infections or certain chronic diseases, can temporarily disrupt the hormonal system

What should you do?

  • If your period is more than 7 days late and you are at risk or worried about being pregnant, you should take a preliminary pregnancy test
  • If the test shows not pregnant, observe your health behaviors in the past period
  • If you miss your period for 2–3 months consecutively → you should see a doctor for a hormone test
