News Reflecting Social Issues: Infant Abandoned in Front of Temple Because Parents Cannot Care for Him
On February 25, 2025, a male infant was found abandoned in front of Saman Rattanaram Temple in Chachoengsao Province. CCTV captured footage around 2:00 AM of a young woman placing the child there before leaving without looking back. Fortunately, someone discovered the baby in the morning and informed Phra Ratchawachiraprachanat, the abbot of Saman Rattanaram Temple. He took the child to Phutthasothon Hospital and named him “Nong Mee Boon.”
Later, authorities tracked down the child’s parents, both aged 19, who decided to abandon their child due to economic problems, lack of support, and unpreparedness to raise a child. This incident exemplifies issues arising from unplanned pregnancies and insufficient social support systems.
But instead of facing these problems alone, how can society help those with unplanned pregnancies?
1. Providing Education on Sexuality and Proper Contraception
- Many cases of unplanned pregnancies result from lack of knowledge about sexual education
- Education on effective contraception methods such as birth control pills, condoms, IUDs, and contraceptive implants should be provided
- Schools and families should play a role in providing knowledge without using threats or creating fear
2. Supporting Options for Those with Unplanned Pregnancies
- Provide counseling and psychological support through relevant agencies or organizations
- Provide information about legal rights, safe pregnancy termination, and seeking state assistance
- Create access to safe options such as adoption in cases where the child cannot be raised
3. Economic and Social Welfare Support
- Many facing unplanned pregnancies encounter economic issues, leaving them with no good options
- The state should have financial support programs such as single mother assistance or scholarships for teenage mothers
- Promote access to healthcare systems that support mothers and children
4. Reducing Stigma and Providing Opportunities for a Better Future for Those with Unplanned Pregnancies
- In many cases, those with unplanned pregnancies are viewed negatively by society, leaving them without support or help
- Workplaces and educational institutions should provide opportunities for those with unplanned pregnancies to continue their education or work to build a better future
- Change society’s perspective from blame to support
5. Creating Support Networks and Accessible Counseling
- Have counseling centers for those with unplanned pregnancies
- Expand networks of non-profit organizations that assist those with unplanned pregnancies
- Create platforms for those facing issues to easily access information and seek help
