If you have just had unprotected sex, or if protection failed such as a broken condom, forgot to take birth control pills, or are unsure, do not panic yet because there are still ways to reduce the risk of pregnancy if acted upon in time.

What to do immediately

1. Take emergency contraceptive pills as soon as possible. Emergency contraceptives are most effective if taken within the first 24 hours.

2. Count the time after intercourse. If it hasn’t been long (e.g., on the same day) → take it immediately, or if within 5 days after unprotected intercourse, it can still reduce the chance of pregnancy.

3. Monitor symptoms after taking the medication. There may be side effects such as nausea or irregular menstruation. If your period does not come within 3 weeks → a pregnancy test is recommended.

If you feel unsure, you should seek further advice from a team of experts to plan a long-term prevention method that suits you.
