Took 2 emergency contraceptive pills in a row, are there any side effects?

If you take 2 emergency contraceptive pills in a row within the same cycle, it’s not considered wrong, but it’s not a method that should be used frequently and may cause more side effects than usual.

How does emergency contraception work?

It inhibits ovulation (not an abortion pill). If taken within the first 24 hours after intercourse, its effectiveness is maximized. It is not recommended to use more than 1 pack per menstrual cycle.

Possible side effects

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Breast tenderness, mood swings
  • Irregular menstruation (early, late, or spotting)

What should you do next?

  • If not ready for pregnancy → Consider planning other contraceptive methods such as daily pills, injections, or condoms.
  • If concerned about abnormal symptoms → Wait for menstruation in 2–3 weeks. If it doesn’t come, a pregnancy test is recommended.
