” Currently, there is a very safe and simple technology for terminating a pregnancy, which is the use of Mifepristone (commercially known as RU-486) and Misoprostol (commercially known as Cytotec).
Patients can take the medication at home by taking one Mifepristone tablet. After 24-48 hours, use Misoprostol by inserting it into the vagina, rectum, under the tongue, or in the cheek pouch until the medication dissolves. It is advisable to have someone with you and not to do it alone. The appropriate gestational age should be less than 9 weeks, with a safety rate of 92-98%, considered very low risk. If the gestational age is more than 9 weeks, this method can still be used but should be under close medical supervision.
This method has exceptions for individuals at risk, such as those who have had a cesarean section, ectopic pregnancy, or have underlying health conditions. Although the effectiveness of the medication is not 100%, it is a modern medical technology that is convenient and not as frightening as in the past, and it certainly improves life.” Said by Dr. Orawee Chintakanond, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, at the Pro-Voice 4: Abortion 4G event and the 44th meeting of the Network Supporting Women’s Choices for Unplanned Pregnancies on September 27, 2017.
