Registered Pregnancy Termination (Abortion) Drugs in Thailand
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the registration of two types of tablets packaged together for pregnancy termination, abortion in women without medical contraindications. The indication is for providing pregnancy termination services under legal conditions and the Medical Council’s regulations. The medication can be prescribed by trained doctors without medical contraindications.
The aforementioned drug formulation consists of two types of tablets: Mifepristone (mifepristone), commercially known as RU486, which can be found on illegal abortion drug websites, is an anti-progesterone hormone drug, 200 mg, 1 tablet, and Misoprostol (misoprostol), commercially known as Cytotec, which is a prostaglandin analogue drug, 200 mcg, 4 tablets, for use 24 – 48 hours later, to be inserted into the vagina or placed under the tongue. Both types of drugs are packaged together for safe pregnancy termination, abortion, within a gestational age not exceeding 9 weeks or 63 days from the last menstrual period.
On June 13, 2016, the resolution of the Subcommittee on the Development of the National List of Essential Medicines considered selecting Misoprostol and Mifepristone packaged together for medical pregnancy termination with a gestational age not exceeding 24 weeks, to be included in the National List of Essential Medicines, Sub-list J(1). The Sub-list J(1) requires a special project by government agencies, with the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, responsible for managing and planning the close supervision of drug use.
However, these two types of drugs are registered separately in many countries and are widely used for pregnancy termination (safe abortion). The use of the drugs is safe, highly effective, and has very few complications if used under the supervision of trained doctors and nurses in this field.
