Recently, there have been various opinions about the removal of contraceptive implants. Dr. Ruangkit Sirikanjanakul, the coordinator of the RSA volunteer network, shares his experience and method of implant removal. It’s very easy. The removal of a single-rod implant by a specialist results in a very small wound that doesn’t require stitching.
Contraceptive implants are a highly effective method of birth control, with an efficacy rate of up to 99.95%. The new generation of implants, called Nextplanon, contains a radiopaque substance that can be seen on X-rays. It is a soft (not a needle) drug rod, small in size, 4 cm long and 2 mm wide, implanted under the skin on the inner side of the non-dominant upper arm (mostly the left side).
If the implant cannot be felt, an X-ray is needed to determine its position in the arm. If visible, it indicates that the implant is deep, making it difficult to feel, and preparations can be made for its removal.
Steps for Removing Contraceptive Implants
The doctor will feel for the implant at the end, where it is clearly visible as a raised area (see at the tip of the thumb). Then, a local anesthetic is injected under the implant to make it protrude.
Once the implant is located, the doctor uses a small scalpel to make a 2 mm incision in the skin where the implant is, allowing it to emerge.
Then the doctor will use their hand to push the implant out so it protrudes.
Use tools to clamp and remove the contraceptive implant. There may be slight bleeding, but no stitches are needed, and the wound is covered with gauze. Done.
