In 2012, Thailand introduced the abortion medication Medabon, which contains the drugs Mifepristone (also known by the trade name RU486) and Misoprostol (Cytotec), packaged together for use in a pilot research study. The research found that Medabon is more than 95% effective and safe for terminating pregnancies.

The Ministry of Public Health has registered this medication and included it in the national essential medicines list for medical use, and it is a prescription-only medication. It is available only at registered healthcare facilities that receive the medication from the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health. Abortion medication cannot be purchased from pharmacies or online. Medabon is currently the only officially registered abortion medication in Thailand.

Service units within the RSA (Referral System for Safe Abortion) volunteer network receive support from the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health. Individuals facing unplanned pregnancies can access counseling services for unplanned pregnancy options and safe abortion services by contacting the hotline at 1663 from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM every day.
