What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception is a method of birth control used after unprotected sex or when a condom breaks, slips, or primary contraception fails. It should not be used as a primary method of contraception because it is less effective than other methods.

Correct use of emergency contraception

  • There are 2 types of emergency contraception
    • Type 1 pill: Take as soon as possible or within 72 hours
    • Type 2 pills
      • Take the first pill as soon as possible or within 72 hours, and the second pill 12 hours after the first
      • Take both pills together as soon as possible or within 72 hours
  • If vomiting occurs within 2 hours after taking, a new pill should be taken immediately

Precautions regarding emergency contraception

  • Should not be used regularly because it contains a high amount of hormones, which may cause irregular menstrual cycles
  • Cannot prevent sexually transmitted diseases
  • Cannot induce abortion if already pregnant, emergency contraception will have no effect
  • May have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, irregular menstruation
