Medication alone is sufficient for pregnancy termination, no need for curettage

Many people still believe that after using medication for pregnancy termination, it is necessary to perform curettage to ensure it is “clean” or a “complete abortion.” This understanding is not true in current medical practice because using medication correctly under a doctor’s supervision is sufficient and safe.

Curettage is no longer the current approach

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the guidelines of the Thai Ministry of Public Health have discontinued the use of “curettage (D&C)” for pregnancy termination for many years due to the risk of complications such as uterine perforation, infection, or future infertility.

What should be done after using the medication?

  • If you use the medication correctly and experience bleeding as explained by the doctor → generally, no further action is needed.
  • The doctor may schedule a follow-up examination (such as an ultrasound or urine test) to confirm a complete abortion.
  • If tissue remains, vacuum aspiration (MVA) may be used instead, which is much safer and more modern.
