After amending the law to make pregnancy termination a service in the health system, the next challenge is to ensure that personnel fully understand this service #WhenThereIsNoServiceYouMustReferToSafeService.. Denial without a solution is pushing the service recipient back into the unsafe cycle as before

Telling them to continue the pregnancy, who is responsible?

The other day, there was a case where someone called to consult about a 16-year-old sister who was not ready for pregnancy and wanted to terminate it, having already consulted with her mother.

It was assessed that the sister still wanted to study, and the sister and mother were not ready to help take care of the child because the family’s financial situation was not good, with low income, and if the father found out, there was a chance of physical harm.

The sister and mother therefore helped hide this from the father and wanted to handle it before the pregnancy progressed further.

The mother took the child to a nearby public health center in Bangkok, hoping to receive advice to find a solution.

After expressing the decision to terminate the pregnancy, the staff showed an unfriendly attitude. The response was, “Don’t talk about this. We will make a referral to the hospital for prenatal care. You must continue the pregnancy.”

Continuing the pregnancy doesn’t end at 9 months
Telling them to continue the pregnancy, who is responsible?
The person not ready to be a mother will become a mother, and the mother and family are not ready to help raise the child.

State welfare is available during prenatal care and childbirth, but after childbirth, there is not enough financial support for living.

Even though the law guarantees the right to terminate a pregnancy for women who are not ready, and services are provided in public health units, practical problems still exist.
